Wanderlust Sunday: Travel Wish-List

Photo: Jethariot

If you could wrap health and happiness, our MacGyvered Christmas tree would be surrounded by a mountain of gifts. Each one a wish for a loved one, covered in sparkly paper and ribbons.

Yeah, yeah...

I know that sounds sappy and cliche. But it's the God's honest truth. I'm of an age and circumstance where all I really want for Christmas is the stuff you can't wrap.

I do, however, have a wish-list... For that someday when the extravagant is within reach. You can't wrap anything on that list either. Because instead of stuff, I want experiences.

Travel experiences, to be specific. And nothing feeds that desire like reading others' blogs. I come across places and things all the time that I'd never have heard of without a blogger's voice, and it's fun to live those experiences vicariously.

Even if I never see them for myself, these places that open my eyes to the world go on my travel wish-list. So for this week's Wanderlust Sunday, I thought I'd share a few faraway somedays I've discovered.

Around the World With "L"
Tiger Palace - near Bangkok, Thailand

World Lillie is an American school teacher who took some time off to travel the globe, and I'm glad to be able to join in vicariously. This story about the Tiger Palace an hour outside of Bangkok sure got my attention. A place as exotic as this is most certainly on my wish list.

Camels and Chocolate
Budapest, Hungary

Of course I've heard of Budapest, but it was never on my travel wish list until seeing these pictures. I like this story because this couple set out with a plane ticket and a hotel room booked... nothing else. They let their plans unfold as they went, which is sometimes the most fun way to travel.

Dim Sum, Bagels and Crawfish
Valley of the Temples — Sicily

How's that for a blog title to peak your curiosity? It chronicles the adventures of a Jewish, Cajun, Taiwanese, American family living in Sicily. Italy has long been on my wish list — in fact, it's close to the top. But I'd never heard about Sicily's Valley of the Temples until this blog pointed it out.

Go See Run Eat Drink
Cappadocia, Turkey

Go, See, Eat, Drink ... I'm totally willing. Though I normally don't Run, this blog's adventures make me want to run to get my passport. Check out this story about hot air ballooning over "fairy chimneys" in Cappadocia, Turkey. Really. Check it out! Is that wish list worthy, or what?

Inside the Travel Lab
Sparks in Seville, Spain

Spain has long been on my to-see list, and Seville would certainly be on my real-life itinerary. The romantic in me likes Inside the Travel Lab's snapshot of the culture there. This is just the kind of passion I imagine about Spain.

SoulTraveler3
England Cotswolds

Who wouldn't want to visit the "Heart of England," especially if it looks like this? It's the country's designated "area of outstanding natural beauty" and I might not ever have known to put it on my list without the help of this SoulTraveler3 post.

Travel by the Calendar
Salar De Uyuni, Bolivia

Helly, the author of Travels by the Calendar, highlights great places and also gives advice on the best time to go. This story is on the salt flats in southwest Bolivia, where the land is so flat you can see the curvature of the Earth! There are two recommended times to visit there. My wish list has an asterisk by *December, when it's warm.

Wanderlust and Lipstick
Giant's Causeway — Northern Ireland

The name Wanderlust and Lipstick sounds like travel blog nirvana to a restless girly-girl like me. Seriously, the only thing that could get me to click faster is if it also referenced great shoes. But it's about great places, and this highlighted place is somewhere I could sit all day. Northern Ireland's Giant's Causeway is on my someday list.

Of course, these offer just a sampling of all there is in the world to see, but I like being introduced to new places with this kind of snapshot. How about you? What's on your travel wish list? Whether it's across the globe or in your own town, I hope the coming year brings many adventures.

YES! That's the only consolation for not being able to globe trot for real... until someday, that is. Meantime, the virtual world awaits!
