Wanderlust Sunday: America's Best Idea

Last week I had a little fun with a silly tale about a trivia game at Canyonlands National Park, but I did come away with some good information. I learned that preserving wilderness and history for the enjoyment of everyone is an American idea. The first such park in the world was Yellowstone. Other countries have since followed suit.

God bless America.

That's what I think whenever I visit a National Park.
I first caught the bug when I visited Zion NP years ago. I was so awed by the grandeur of nature, and proud that my country would preserve these treasures just for you and me, that I've since taken advantage of this great idea every chance I get.

So my DVR is set to record a six part documentary on the National Park Service premiering tonight on PBS. It's a story of stirring adventure and enduring inspirations set against the backdrop of the most breathtaking scenery imaginable.

The National Parks: America's Best Idea

Premieres Sunday, September 27 at 8pm ET/PT on PBS

The National Parks: America's Best Idea is a six-episode series directed by Ken Burns and written and co-produced by Dayton Duncan. Filmed over the course of more than six years at some of nature's most spectacular locales, it's nonetheless a story of people. People who were willing to devote themselves to saving some precious portion of the land they loved, and in doing so remind their fellow citizens of the full meaning of democracy.

The documentary website is full of beautiful photos, stories and video clips, and allows you to make a scrapbook of your own. I bookmarked some shots of my personal favorites. What are yours?

I really want to see this new Ken Burns series... and yet I'm totally jealous of him. It's the film I always wanted to make. :-(

I LOVE our national parks - and I'm grateful that American politicians have done something right by preserving them!
