Today's Wanderlust Sunday post is dedicated to the great state of California. I don't know if you've been following the news, but she's in dire financial straits, guys — resorting to pay her debts with IOUs. In addition to the fact that much of the food on my table and entertainment on my TV comes from there, California is the source of some really spectacular travel memories. For that, I owe her some props.

As a former resident and current neighbor of this diverse and beautiful state, I've done a fair amount of exploring there. But my list of favorites wouldn't scratch the surface of what this great state offers. So I made a list of resources I think are good. From world-class cities to high Sierra wilderness, just about anywhere you land in California is well-worth your travel dollar.

National Parks

From thelowest, hottest point in the Western Hemisphere in Death Valley to the highest peak in the lower 48 atop Mt. Whitney, California is home to a host of natural superlatives. Some of America's most prized must-see treasures can be found in CA National Parks.

National Scenic Byways

Sometimes the journey is as spectacular as the destination, which is why this is one of my favorite resources when planning travel. When CA maps denote something as scenic, uh, they're not kidding.

California State Parks

Some of California's most beautiful beaches are preserved as State Parks. This site will guide you to other historic and geologic spots you might otherwise miss.

I'm no golfer, and even I want to play Pebble Beach or Torrey Pines. If tee time is your thing, California is your paradise.

California Wineries

If you like the idea of a little crushed grape escape, California is your destination. Napa is famous for wine, but vineyards can be found throughout the state. No matter what region you visit, wine tasting can easily be incorporated into your itinerary.
