White Girl Gets Her Ass Up Over Her Shoulders

I was cruising around on Stuff White People Like this morning enjoying the reminder that I'm a walking cliché. You've probably seen or heard of this before — it's a wildly popular blog turned published book displayed on end-caps at Barnes and Noble.

I came across the entry
describing how white people love being offended.

...there are few things white people love more than being offended.

Naturally, white people do not get offended by statements directed at white people.  In fact, they don’t even have a problem making offensive statements about other white people (ask a white person about “flyover states”).  As a rule, white people strongly prefer to get offended on behalf of other people.

I finished the article and laughed at myself. I do — I totally love indignant outrage. Especially if it's over something I have no power or will to control. Don't give me any responsibility, for God's sake, just let me feel superior and smug. My reaction is about me, not the alleged target of fill-in-the-blank insult, so it doesn't matter whether or not its patronizing. Mmmm-hmmm. Interesting revelation. I should just chillax and stop getting my ass up over my shoulders.

Then I moved down the list of blogs I've been keeping an eye on. Vanity Plates: Creepiness in 8 Characters or Less had a new entry in my feed reader, which made me a little giddy because these posts make me laugh every time. The blog is dedicated to making fun of people who drive cars with vanity plates, and the commentary on readers' photo submissions is great. But today's entry didn't make me laugh. No, I was sitting here with the Stuff White People Like screwed-up face. Like the blogger, I was outraged.

A Very Horrible License Plate

Slash his tires!
Run him off the road!
Rear end him with a tank!

This white girl is offended by that driver. And you know what? I like the fact that I'm offended by such egregious creeps. If I weren't, I'd be a bigger a$$hole. Indignation makes me think.
